Now that I actually have access to a car and the need to drive fairly regularly, I've been reading about and trying something called hypermiling. I first heard about it in this article ages ago, and decided to check it out and see if it helped with my dislike (who am I kidding, absolute terror) for driving. I don't know that it's helped with my fear of driving, because I probably piss off an order of magnitude more people, and am just more dangerous with some of these tactics, but hey, I'm thoroughly entertained.
I was pretty psyched to make ~34 mpg off my last tank of gas, but looking at stats from people that do this hardcore, I've got a long way to go still. And given that I don't think I'm ever going to get together the nerve to tailgate lorries or put cardboard over my radiator, I think this is about as good as it's going to get for me.
Final verdict: I'd still rather be walking.

I've been doing the same thing, although nothing too extreme.
A couple of times I turned off the car while waiting for a long light but I was a bit awkward starting it back up again so I haven't kept it up.
Unfortunately the best I get is around 22 MPG, but I'm keeping track and trying not to accelerate more than I need.
